EASA ATPL(H) Distance Learning Course

A modular helicopter specific self-study program for the EASA ATPL(H), in three modules covering fourteen subjects, geared for 650 hours of home study, with a 2-week consolidation covering them all at the CAPT offices on the South coast of UK, 1 hour by train away from London Gatwick Airport, England. Consolidation weeks take place in the last 2 weeks of every other month (see Calendar page). The material itself is not difficult to master, but there is a lot of it, so you should allow about 6 months for the whole process, including taking the exams, based on 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, but this could be longer or (slightly) shorter, depending on your aptitude, finances, weather, family commitments, etc. (we base it on 20 study hours per week).

To start the course, you must hold an ICAO PPL(H), and have enough knowledge of maths and physics to understand the course content, but much of what you need is included. Although it is not required to start our course, we recommend that you also obtain a Class 1 medical, because all the studying in the world is no use unless you pass it!

Progress tests (below) should be completed and submitted every week (by email), and you must gain a pass mark of 75%. We are obliged to keep a close eye on your progress, and there is an 18-month window in which to complete your studies, and another 18 months to complete the exams, from the date of your first exam. For the support service, we are available on telephone, skype and email, and if we can't give you an immediate answer, we aim to produce a solution within 24 hours.

  • The entry to any course costs £395, to include PDF study notes, inclusion on to our study area on Aviation Exam (plus global access to their database), and all the hangers-on, such as VAT and bank charges, which we incur on your behalf when setting up your training file. This is non-refundable.

  • Consolidation days are charged as and when you need them, at £135 per day, including VAT. Each day consists of 8 study hours.

The eventual cost of a full ATPL(H) course to an ICAO PPL(H) holder would therefore be £1475 as 65 hours are required in the classroom (8 days). A CPL(H) course would be £800 as only 25 hours are required in the classroom (3 days).

The cost of a full ATPL(H) course to an ICAO CPL(H) holder would be £1070, as only 40 hours are required in the classroom (5 days).

The cost of a full ATPL(H) course to an ICAO ATPL(H) holder who is able to self-certify (with over 1000 hours on multipilot helicopters), can be very low! You could just buy the printed notes, but tablet-friendly colour PDFs are available for helicopters at just $59.99. Note: It is not possible to pass the exams on knowledge alone! You need proper guidance! Classroom time is chargeable as above but, on this occasion, it can be done entirely over the internet.

As of mid 2016, the exams cost £68 per paper.

Don't forget accommodation, and that some items required for the course, such as the Jeppesen Manual, Douglas Protractor, Flight Computer, etc. are not included in the course prices, as we figure that students will have their own preferences.

Progress Tests

These progress tests are for the use of CAPT students. If you are not a CAPT student but have stumbled across them, you may use them as an aid for your own studies, as a gesture of goodwill on our part, but they are NOT a replacement for the online databases (as listed below). You may not alter, deface, sell or otherwise distribute them.

We have our own database which may be used while it is under development for revision purposes. In return for free use of it, please feel free to report any problems you find!
